Dr. Joel Hanisek, SAR Europe’s Policy & Programme Manager will be a featured speaker at a conference on “Resisting multiple pressures – Perspectives on Academic Freedom in Europe”, taking place at New University in Ljubljana from 11-12 November 2021. Further information on the event available here.
Participants will discuss academic freedom in Hungary, Slovenia and Turkey; questions of funding, digitalisation, globalisation dynamics and shifting socio-political roles of academics in Europe; and opportunities to protect academic freedom in Europe. The Seminar will bring together European scholars and practitioners from various backgrounds and re:constitution Fellows to discuss specific topical issues of high political and constitutional relevance. The re:constitution programme intends to inspire discussion about democracy, the rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights and the shifting political dynamics in Europe. Funded by Stiftung Mercator and co-managed by Berlinbased Forum Transregionale Studien and Democracy Reporting International, the re:constitution programme awards Fellowships to scholars and practitioners, organises events and offers topical analysis. In Ljubljana, the participants will gather in three panels to discuss: 1. Academic freedom under pressure: Case studies from Hungary, Slovenia and Turkey 2. Academic freedom in a broader context – Funding, digitalization, globalization dynamics and shifting socio-political roles of academics in Europe 3. Developing solutions and creating opportunities to protect academic freedom in Europe.
