Academic Freedom under discussion at the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council

On July 11th, 2023, Mr. Eamon Gilmore, European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, delivered the opening remarks at a side event on academic freedom at the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.

The event was co-sponsored by the European Union, Uruguay, Portugal, and France.

Panellists discussed existing human rights standards, and introduced new guidance, the Principles for Implementing the Right of Academic Freedom, which have been developed by an international working group.
